The upcoming McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament, scheduled for January 16-18, 2025, at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, may mark a poignant farewell for two sevens rugby icons, Jerry Tuwai and Rosko Specman. As part of the Mike Friday Select 7s team, they will join forces for a much-anticipated debut collaboration on the pitch.

Tuwai, a celebrated two-time Olympic gold medalist and former World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year, embodies the spirit of Fiji rugby, characterized by his remarkable skills, leadership, and tenacity. He recently added a silver medal to his accolades at the Paris Summer Olympics in 2024, further solidifying his legacy in the sport.

Specman, known affectionately as “Specmagic” for his extraordinary speed and agility, was instrumental in South Africa’s victory in the 2017/2018 World Series. He transitioned smoothly into 15s rugby after his successful sevens career, competing with the Cheetahs in the Pro 14 competition. Notably, he also collected two bronze medals at the Rio (2016) and Paris (2024) Olympics.

This tournament will be historic, as it will not just feature these superstars but also integrated players from various backgrounds, including former Irish 7s captain Harry McNulty and American sevens player Matai Leuta. The team will include eight talented Fijian players: Lasaro Bogisa, Jope Tikoilepanoni, Iliavi Masori, Iowane Teba, Rauto Vakadranu, Ilikimi Torosi, Manueli Maisamoa, and Pilipo Bukayaro.

The Coral Coast 7s tournament expects participation from 44 teams and aims to create an electric atmosphere combining established players with emerging local talents. With free admission, the event is set to cultivate community spirit and showcase Fiji’s rich rugby culture, fostering a love of the sport among younger athletes who will have the unique opportunity to learn from some of the best in the game.

The combination of seasoned athletes and rising stars promises a riveting experience for fans and participants alike, reinforcing rugby’s vital role in Fijian culture and providing hope that this tournament will inspire the next generation of rugby talent in Fiji.
