The upcoming McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament, scheduled for January 16-18, 2025, at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, is generating significant excitement as it may mark the final competitive appearance of legendary rugby players Jerry Tuwai and Rosko Specman in the sevens format. As part of the highly anticipated Mike Friday Select 7s team, their collaboration on the field is particularly meaningful, culminating from years of rivalry in international competitions.

Jerry Tuwai is celebrated as a two-time Olympic gold medalist and prior World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year. His career achievements include recently winning a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, reinforcing his standing as a cornerstone of Fijian rugby. Tuwai embodies the spirit of the sport through his humility, leadership, and flair, making him a cherished figure among fans.

Rosko Specman, affectionately known as “Specmagic,” brings his renowned speed and agility to the team. He played a vital role in South Africa’s success during the 2017/2018 HSBC World Series and has since made a successful transition to 15s rugby, competing with the Cheetahs in the Pro 14 league. Specman, too, boasts a distinguished medal roster, including bronze medals from the Rio (2016) and Paris (2024) Olympics.

This tournament not only commemorates the careers of Tuwai and Specman but also serves as a platform to inspire youth. The team will be complemented by other notable athletes, such as former Irish 7s captain Harry McNulty and American standout Matai Leuta, together with promising Fijian players including Lasaro Bogisa and Iowane Teba.

The Coral Coast 7s will feature a total of 44 teams—including 16 men’s teams, 16 youth teams, and 12 women’s teams—creating a vibrant sporting atmosphere that highlights both local talent and international prowess. With free admission, the event encourages community participation, promoting unity and camaraderie among fans.

As anticipation builds, the tournament symbolizes not just a farewell to two rugby icons but also embodies hope for the future of the sport in Fiji. By connecting established legends with emerging talents, the Coral Coast 7s aims to reinforce the rich heritage of rugby and inspire future generations of athletes. It promises to be an unforgettable celebration, showcasing the resilience and passion that characterize Fijian rugby culture.
