Vendors at Laqere market in Nasinu are eagerly anticipating the reopening of their renovated market space, which they believe is long overdue after weeks of selling from temporary outdoor tents. The market was notorious for leaking roofs and poor lighting, making it challenging for vendors to operate effectively. Rajeshni Devi and Varisila Vosalotaki, both vendors, expressed the difficulties they faced due to the outdated infrastructure.
To address these concerns, Nasinu Town Council executive chairman Felix Magnus announced that the $74,000 renovation project aims to enhance both the vendor and customer experience. Expected to reopen on August 2, the renovated market will feature improved facilities, including proper washrooms, adequate lighting, and a designated fish bay area, which were key complaints from the vendors.
With around 50 vendors at the market and potential space for more, this upgrade is viewed as a positive step toward ensuring a more comfortable and productive environment for sellers. Magnus acknowledged the importance of listening to vendor feedback, stating that their visibility while operating outside has helped attract more customers, highlighting a strong community connection.
This development at Laqere market reflects a broader commitment to improving market facilities throughout Fiji, similar to renovations seen at other market locations, such as the Labasa Fish Market. The initiative is poised to not only enhance working conditions for vendors but also to bolster local economic growth and community engagement.
The successful renovation of Laqere market serves as a hopeful reminder of the impact that addressed infrastructural challenges can have on local businesses.
