Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, has announced plans for open consultations with landowners in Vanua Levu and Namosi before the end of the month. These discussions are centered on addressing ongoing issues associated with the Mt Kasi Gold Mine and concerns raised by the mataqali Nabukebuke of Namosi.
The consultations come in response to the government’s decision to retain the current contractor at the Mt Kasi Gold Mine, despite landowners expressing a preference for a different company. Mr. Vosarogo has emphasized the necessity of constructive dialogue, affirming, “The Government has made its decision, and I will be visiting the landowners to discuss the processes that will follow these consultations.”
Mr. Vosarogo plans to engage with the mataqali Nabukebuke regarding their strong opposition to the issuance of a special prospecting license (SPL). He highlighted the importance of fostering open discussions to address community fears and build mutual understanding. He stated, “These matters must be discussed; they’ve been very strong in their opposition to the SPL being renewed.”
This initiative reflects an important commitment from the government to actively engage with local communities. By prioritizing these consultations, there is a hopeful opportunity to cultivate a more constructive relationship that addresses the concerns of landowners while also promoting economic development through job creation and sustainable income.
Overall, Minister Vosarogo’s upcoming consultations are poised to facilitate necessary dialogues regarding the Mt Kasi Gold Mine and SPL issues. This proactive engagement is a significant step forward, promoting cooperation and understanding that could benefit both the landowners and the broader community in Fiji.
