Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, has announced plans to conduct open consultations with landowners in Vanua Levu and Namosi by the end of this month. These discussions aim to address significant issues related to the Mt Kasi Gold Mine and the mataqali Nabukebuke of Namosi.
In response to inquiries regarding the government’s decision to retain the current contractor for the Mt Kasi Gold Mine, which does not align with the landowners’ preferences for a different operator, Vosarogo emphasized the need for constructive dialogue. “The Government has made its decision, and I will be visiting the landowners to discuss the processes that will follow these consultations,” he stated.
Furthermore, Vosarogo plans to engage the mataqali Nabukebuke about their staunch opposition to the issuance of a special prospecting license (SPL). He affirmed that fostering an open platform for discussion is critical, noting, “These matters must be discussed; they’ve been very strong in their opposition to the SPL being renewed.”
The Minister highlighted the government’s role in actively engaging with the community, listening to their concerns, and providing reassurances. He believes that a cooperative dialogue can contribute to job creation and sustainable income through the development of the mineral sector.
This approach reflects a commitment from the government to enhance communication and build partnerships with landowners, signaling a hopeful transition toward more inclusive governance in managing natural resources in Fiji. Such consultations present an opportunity for mutual understanding and economic growth, ultimately benefiting the local communities involved.
By prioritizing these open discussions, there is potential for a sincere dialogue that not only addresses the concerns of the landowners but also promotes a future of collaborative development and community involvement.
