Landowners vs. TLTB: The Truth Behind the $200 Million Rumor

Solomone Nata, CEO of the iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB), has taken steps to clarify discussions regarding a rumored $200 million compensation claim from landowners of 701 acres at Toko in Tavua. At a recent consultation held at Toko Sanatan Primary School, Nata strongly contested claims made by Tevita Ralulu, chairman of the Mataqali Tilivasewa, stating, “We completely disregard that claim.”

Nata emphasized that neither TLTB, the landowners, nor the Tui Tavua are involved in the rumored compensation demand. He pointed out that these allegations lack any foundational basis. Addressing lease conditions, Nata noted that certain prohibitions, such as the sale of liquor and cutting of trees, still apply under the Native Land Trust Act. Overall, he indicated that the current discussion should focus more on fair compensation for land rent rather than on unfounded claims.

The issue stems from ongoing frustrations among landowners regarding the 999-year land leases, which have been criticized for insufficient compensation over the decades. Nata referred to past inequities, stating the TLTB is looking to improve fairness in rent evaluations with government support. “While the conditions of leasing now evolve, we must ensure equitable solutions,” he stated.

In support of Nata, tenant representative Dhirendra Singh voiced approval for the TLTB’s clarification and expressed optimism for ongoing negotiations. Additionally, Ratu Ovini Bokini Naurabota, a trustee of the Mataqali Tilivasewa, echoed his sentiments, confirming that the community seeks productive discussions rather than sensationalist claims.

This situation highlights a critical dialogue between landowners and TLTB about historical grievances and the need for fair compensation practices moving forward. TLTB remains committed to addressing these longstanding concerns, promoting stability and fairness within the community.

The collaborative efforts seen in this ongoing dialogue provide hope for a resolution that respects both tenant security and landowner interests. By fostering meaningful communication, TLTB aims to pave a path toward equitable land management that can benefit all stakeholders involved.
