Landowners in Sigatoka have expressed their readiness to offer land to the Fijian Government for a new landfill, a decision that comes as the existing landfill in Naboro approaches its maximum capacity. Mosese Bulitavu, the Minister for Environment and Climate Change, confirmed that waste management has become a pressing issue requiring immediate action. He noted the ministry’s ongoing engagement in exploring potential new landfill sites, including the recent discussions concerning the Sigatoka dump and another possible site in the West.
Minister Bulitavu emphasized the necessity of tackling the country’s escalating waste problems and pledged to enhance the ministry’s effectiveness and efficiency. As part of this commitment, he revealed that the ministry plans to undertake a review of its operations and implement a new strategy to improve service delivery in critical areas.
He stated, “We have the resources and funding,” and mentioned that under the leadership of permanent secretary Sivendra Michael, negotiations are underway to secure additional funding for environmental projects in the coming years. The ministry is also collaborating with global partners and trust funds to strengthen support for initiatives related to climate change and environmental management.
This development aligns with prior discussions highlighted in Parliament by other government officials, including Minister Maciu Nalumisa, who have voiced concerns about the environmental risks posed by the current dumpsite in Sigatoka, notably its proximity to UNESCO World Heritage sites. The government’s broader strategy involves not only creating new landfills but also improving sustainable waste management practices throughout Fiji.
The situation presents an opportunity for positive change as local collaboration may lead to innovative solutions that address both waste management needs and environmental protection. With the involvement of the community and government, there is hope that Fiji can build a more sustainable future that mitigates environmental impacts while supporting local development.
