Fiji Hardwood Corporation Ltd, along with the Government, needs to prioritize addressing ongoing concerns with landowners before pursuing forest certification, according to mahogany landowners from central Viti Levu. This sentiment was expressed during a recent discussion with Alitia Bainivalu, the Minister for Forestry and Fisheries, in Savu Village, Tailevu.

Kalisiana Nakelo, a former board secretary and a landowner, emphasized the importance of forest certification in enhancing the international market value of mahogany. She noted that many international buyers only accept wood from certified sources, making it essential for Fiji, which produces genuine mahogany, to resolve outstanding issues to access new markets and maximize financial returns.

Nakelo pointed out that the current review of the Mahogany Industry Development Act would be ineffective without certification. Although the first audit has already occurred, the pending second audit will consider any landowner grievances that could impede the certification process. The independent auditing company will evaluate whether the ten principles necessary for certification are being met, which could lead to a provisional certificate and increased industry opportunities.

Landowners have repeatedly raised concerns regarding their involvement in the operations, occupational safety, sustainable practices, and proper maintenance and monitoring. Company general manager Semi Dranibaka acknowledged that while landowners have participated in logging operations, their engagement has not been consistent. He also mentioned that a grant of $956,000 was secured to support the certification process. Minister Bainivalu has assured that all raised issues will be addressed in an upcoming meeting.

In summary, while the path to certification appears challenging due to unresolved issues with landowners, there is a strong motivation to pursue it, which could significantly benefit Fiji’s mahogany industry in the international market. This indicates a hopeful potential for collaboration and improvement, not just for the company but for the landowners as well, as they seek a more sustainable and inclusive future in the forestry sector.
