Landowners in Namosi are expressing strong opposition to mining activities on their land, directing criticism towards Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo. They have branded his recent remarks as ‘unprofessional’, particularly in response to his comments questioning the role of Lomani Au Maroroi Au (LAMA) chairman, Sipiriano Nariva, within the iTaukei administration.
A statement from LAMA emphasized that Vosarogo’s attack on Nariva signifies a disconnect from the community’s sentiments, suggesting that the minister favors Tui Namosi over the voices of the actual landowners. The organization reminded Vosarogo that neither he nor Tui Namosi holds ownership of the land designated for mining activities. Instead, Nariva represents the landowners’ interests, having been authorized to speak on their behalf.
LAMA urged the minister to engage with all landowners, rather than a select few, and criticized his lack of direct communication with the community in Namosi. The statement highlighted that Vosarogo’s attempts to educate them on iTaukei administrative structures are futile if they fail to reflect the actual needs and voices of the people.
In response to these criticisms, Vosarogo stated he plans to address these concerns in a meeting with Mataqali Nabukebuke, scheduled for mid-2025.
This situation underscores the importance of community involvement in decisions impacting their lands, emphasizing the need for open dialogue between government officials and local representatives. A hopeful perspective may be found in the forthcoming meeting, where an opportunity could arise for greater understanding and collaboration between the government and the community. Improved communication might pave the way for more considerate development that respects the rights and voices of landowners.
Summary: Namosi landowners have criticized Minister Vosarogo for his handling of mining development discussions, urging him to engage more meaningfully with their voices. Voicing strong opposition, they emphasize their representation through LAMA and call for inclusive dialogue before any development decisions are made. Vosarogo has promised to address these issues in a future meeting.
