The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) has released a final notice to 14,661 tenants regarding outstanding lease arrears amounting to $16.7 million. The Board is urging these tenants to clear their overdue payments to prevent potential legal actions.
Isoa Tuwai, the TLTB general manager for Estate Services, emphasized the necessity for tenants to address their arrears without delay. Timely payments are essential to ensure that lease payments are made to landowners on schedule. Tuwai stated, “We are dedicated to working with our tenants to find solutions, but it is critical that arrears are cleared to avoid any further legal actions.”
He reminded tenants of their responsibility to pay lease rental and administration fees in advance on the 1st day of January and July each year, as outlined in their lease agreements. This practice helps avoid legal issues and enables the Board to distribute funds to landowners efficiently.
Tenants are encouraged to visit TLTB offices and talk to the arrears recovery teams if their leases are included in the arrears category. The Board is open to accepting part payments with specific conditions. Additionally, tenants are advised to seek financial support from commercial banks, with which TLTB has made prior arrangements.
Tuwai strongly urged tenants to settle any outstanding payments promptly to avoid disappointments. For inquiries, tenants can contact the Board at the mobile number 990 8959.
In a critical notice, TLTB outlined the implications of non-payment, including the deprivation of lease revenue for landowners, potential publication of tenant names in arrears, and commencement of legal proceedings, which may lead to lease cancellation and loss of property if debts are not settled by November 30, 2024.
This reminder serves as an important call to action for tenants to take responsibility and ensure they meet their obligations, thereby supporting local landowners and fostering good relationships within the community. By addressing these arrears, tenants not only secure their occupancy rights but also contribute positively to the local economy.
Summary: TLTB has issued a final reminder to tenants with lease arrears, emphasizing the need for timely payments to prevent legal action. The Board is willing to work with tenants and has resources available for financial assistance. Tenants are urged to act promptly to avoid further complications.
