The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) has publicly disclosed the names of nearly 100 tenants who are in significant rental arrears. The announcement, made via the TLTB’s social media channels, provides details on each tenant, including the property location and the outstanding amount owed.
The TLTB is urging these tenants to resolve their long-standing arrears, which vary across its operational regions, including Northern, North-Western, South-Western, and Central Eastern areas, as well as across various lease types. The Board has conveyed a serious warning: tenants who fail to settle their debts may face legal action, which could include the disconnection of utilities and the enforcement of vacant possession of their leased properties.
“TLTB reminds all tenants that it is our legal responsibility to collect rent and distribute these funds to the landowners who rightfully deserve returns from the use of their native land,” emphasized a spokesperson from TLTB. They also encouraged affected tenants to reach out to discuss payment arrangements or settle their accounts without delay.
This notice follows earlier reports where the TLTB announced final warnings to over 14,661 tenants regarding cumulative arrears of $16.7 million, emphasizing the importance of timely rent payments to facilitate smooth distributions to landowners.
It’s crucial for tenants to take proactive steps and communicate with the TLTB, as acting promptly can prevent further complications and promote positive relationships between tenants and landowners. The TLTB’s willingness to work with tenants reflects a collaborative spirit aimed at resolving financial difficulties, which ultimately benefits the entire community.
This situation serves as a reminder of the responsibilities tenants hold in maintaining financial commitments, not just for their benefit but for the sustainable livelihoods of the landowners involved.
