The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) has issued a final notice to 14,661 tenants, alerting them to outstanding lease debts totaling $16.7 million. The board is urging tenants to make their overdue payments promptly to avoid the risk of legal action.
Isoa Tuwai, the general manager of Estate Services at TLTB, highlighted the necessity of addressing these arrears quickly to ensure timely lease payments to landowners. Tuwai stated, “We are committed to working with our tenants to find solutions, but it is crucial that arrears are cleared to avoid further legal actions.”
Tenants are reminded of their obligation to pay lease rents and administration fees in advance as stipulated in their lease agreements, specifically on January 1 and July 1 each year. Meeting these deadlines will help prevent litigation and allow the board to efficiently disburse lease revenues to landowners.
For those who may be facing financial difficulties, TLTB encourages tenants to seek assistance from local commercial banks and has arrangements in place to facilitate this. Tuwai emphasized, “We strongly urge all tenants to settle any outstanding payments promptly to avoid disappointments.”
The board has issued important notices, underscoring that landowners are currently missing out on vital lease revenue while tenants continue to benefit from occupying the land. Tenants are strongly encouraged to settle their debts before November 30, 2024; failure to do so may result in the publication of their names in local media and potential legal actions that could lead to lease cancellations and loss of property.
As this situation unfolds, it’s hopeful that the TLTB’s proactive approach and willingness to work with tenants will encourage positive outcomes that benefit both tenants and landowners. By collaborating and seeking financial solutions, tenants can fulfill their obligations while supporting the livelihoods of landowners.
