The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) has taken firm action against tenants who have not paid their rent by ordering the disconnection of water and electricity services for 35 individuals in arrears. TLTB’s CEO, Solomone Nata, revealed that as of February 28, 2025, there are 248 cases pending in court related to rent defaults, with 163 additional cases awaiting writs of summons. In a more severe measure, eight tenants have already been ordered to vacate their properties due to non-compliance.
Nata emphasized that TLTB is intensifying its efforts to recoup outstanding rents and is engaging with tenants to establish structured payment plans, offering them a final chance to remedy their financial obligations before further legal consequences are enforced. “Landowners deserve fair compensation for the use of their land,” he remarked, stressing TLTB’s commitment to ensuring that all rent obligations are upheld.
This enforcement action follows a broader context in which TLTB has previously reported that approximately 25,444 tenants violated their lease agreements, contributing to total arrears exceeding $28.1 million by late February. The TLTB is keen on maintaining constructive dialogues with tenants, especially those who may be struggling financially.
