The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) has successfully transferred nearly 1,000 parcels of land to iTaukei landowning units, marking a significant milestone for indigenous land ownership in Fiji. Chairman Ifereimi Vasu announced that out of 1,026 State Schedule A and B parcels, 991 have been approved for allocation, comprising 749 Schedule A parcels covering approximately 79,809.90 hectares, and 215 Schedule B parcels spanning about 32,340 hectares.

Vasu emphasized the importance of this achievement, stating that it enhances security of tenure for iTaukei landowners and presents opportunities for sustainable land usage and economic empowerment for their communities. The process of allocating these lands began in 2002 under the Land Transfer Amendment Act, reflecting a long-term commitment to rectify historical injustices related to land ownership.

Additionally, ten Schedule A parcels unexpectedly showed surviving members despite past declarations of extinction. There remain 39 parcels—four from Schedule A and thirty-five from Schedule B—that could not be physically identified, which TLTB is working to resolve in collaboration with the iTaukei Lands Commission.

This successful land transfer is aligned with previous announcements by TLTB, where it was reported that 91% of Schedule A and B lands have already been returned to their rightful owners. Such initiatives bolster the ongoing efforts to empower the iTaukei community and restore indigenous rights over ancestral lands. This fosters community cohesion and economic development, ensuring that traditional practices are preserved while allowing for modern utilization of the land.

As these efforts continue, there is a hopeful outlook for further rectifying land disputes in Fiji and enhancing the livelihoods of indigenous populations through lawful recognition of their land rights. The TLTB’s initiatives are a promising step towards building a sustainable future for the iTaukei people, thereby strengthening Fiji’s cultural heritage and economic stability.
