The 999-year lease holders’ association, represented by lawyer Payal Kumar, recently expressed grave concerns regarding a 30-day surrender notice issued by the Land and Property Board (TLTB). During a consultation held in Tavua, Kumar highlighted that some tenants, who are illiterate, are facing panic and uncertainty as the deadline approaches, fearing they might lose their land.
Kumar emphasized the anxiety prevalent among the tenants regarding the decision of TLTB to surrender the lease, stating, “Most of the tenants were thinking of losing their land at the end of 30 days.” The deadline set by the TLTB for the expiration of the notice is February 18, raising questions about what actions will follow.
In addressing the situation, TLTB’s CEO Solomone Nata affirmed the intent behind the public notice—to ensure transparency in the process. Nata acknowledged the difficulty in reaching many of the tenants, saying, “Most of them we have no contact, and we are not sure,” which necessitated public communication.
To alleviate concerns, Nata announced that TLTB is open to extending the 30-day notice period. He proposed holding community meetings, or talanoa sessions, to discuss the matter further, highlighting a willingness to collaborate with the tenants: “We can extend the notice for another 30 days, but we need to work together on this.”
In a hopeful turn, the TLTB’s commitment to engage with the community aims to foster better communication and understanding, potentially alleviating fears surrounding land security for the tenants involved.
Summary: Tenants facing a 30-day surrender notice from TLTB have expressed panic over losing their land. TLTB plans to extend the notice period and engage the community through discussions to address concerns and ensure transparency.
