Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal has been awarded the prestigious 2024 Golden Boy award, making history as the youngest recipient at just 17 years and four months old. This accolade comes after a remarkable year in which he played a significant role in Spain’s triumph at Euro 2024. Italian sports newspaper Tuttosport announced the news on Wednesday, highlighting Yamal’s outstanding achievements on the field.
The Golden Boy award honors young footballers under the age of 21 competing in Europe, and Yamal emerged victorious over notable contenders such as Real Madrid’s Arda Guler and Paris St Germain’s Warren Zaire-Emery. His exceptional performance at the Euro 2024 tournament in Germany earned him the Young Player award, where he also made history as the youngest player to participate in the Euro finals and scored the youngest goal in the competition during Spain’s semi-final victory against France.
In addition to these achievements, Yamal further solidified his status by becoming the youngest player to win the European Championship when Spain secured a 2-1 victory against England in the final. Last month, he was recognized at the Ballon d’Or ceremony, where he received the Kopa Trophy for the best under-21 player in the world, finishing eighth overall in the prestigious awards.
Yamal has continued to impress this season, contributing five goals in 12 league matches for LaLiga leaders Barcelona, the club where he developed through the renowned La Masia academy, following in the footsteps of legends like Lionel Messi.
With Yamal’s victory, he joins an elite list of past winners of the Golden Boy award, including Kylian Mbappe and Wayne Rooney, and becomes the fourth Barcelona player to receive this honor, following Gavi, Pedri, and Messi. In related news, 18-year-old attacking midfielder Vicky Lopez from Barcelona also won the Golden Girl award.
This achievement not only highlights Yamal’s immense talent and potential but also signals a bright future for both the player and Barcelona, as they continue to nurture young talent. The accolades recognized in recent times reinforce the significance of youth development in European football, and Yamal’s achievements inspire many aspiring athletes.
