The Lami High School (LHS) U17 rugby league team achieved a significant 2-0 victory against their longstanding rivals, Nasinu Secondary School, at the Southern Zone Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League competition held at the Saint Marcellin grounds last Saturday. This win has sparked a newfound confidence within the team, as their primary goal in competing has been to showcase their talents to NRL scouts present at the tournament.

The victory over Nasinu, a formidable opponent in the competition, is expected to motivate the LHS team to aim for greater achievements, particularly as they now aspire to secure the top title in the Southern Zone FSSRL. LHS captain Arthur James Pickering expressed the significance of the win, stating, “This is the first time we have defeated Nasinu Secondary School. Despite our losing streak against them, we were determined to end that streak today, and we thank God for his guidance and providence for the win.”

Looking ahead, Pickering acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead, but the taste of victory has bolstered the team’s spirits. “A lot of work needs to be done again, but today’s win has given us confidence of reaching the quarter-finals and going all the way in the southern zone,” he said.

Despite being one of the smaller schools in the league, LHS embraces the challenge of winning the Southern Zone, drawing inspiration from their U19 rugby union team, which gained recognition for clinching the coveted U19 Deans title in 2024. The U17 team proudly wears the same jersey in the FSSRL competition, reminding players of the principles inherent in those uniforms—teamwork, dedication, and discipline—which serve as the cornerstone of a successful sporting culture.

With two victories under their belt, the LHS U17 team is eager to extend their winning streak when they face Napuka Secondary School in the upcoming third round of the FSSRL southern zone competition. This unfolding adventure may not only mark a significant chapter for LHS but could also set the stage for future successes in Fiji’s rugby landscape.
