Lami High School Triumphs Amidst Tension in Deans Trophy Final

The Lami High School Under-19 rugby team remained unfazed by the criticisms and allegations directed at them prior to the Vodafone Deans Trophy finals. Head coach Beniamino Kakaivalu shared this insight following their narrow victory over Queen Victoria School, winning 20-19 at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

Kakaivalu explained that the team engaged in a social media blackout, which he believes helped the players concentrate on the game and distance themselves from negative influences. He views this victory as a stepping stone toward their larger ambitions.

Looking ahead, Kakaivalu expressed plans to form an Under-18 side next year to contend for further titles. Reflecting on their journey, he noted the challenges they faced, including a trip to Vanua Levu for national qualifiers, where they secured a spot in the quarterfinals by defeating Dreketi Central College 24-21. They went on to upset Ratu Kadavulevu School 11-5 and Ratu Navula College 13-10 in the semifinals.

Kakaivalu emphasized the determination of his players, stating that the reputation of their opponents did not intimidate them, as they showed immense heart and tenacity throughout the tournament.
