The Lami High School Under-19 rugby team remained unfazed by the criticisms and allegations they faced during the Vodafone Deans Trophy finals. Head coach Beniamino Kakaivalu shared this insight following their narrow victory against Queen Victoria School, winning 20-19 in the U19 final at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium.
“The boys were on a social media blackout,” Kakaivalu explained when asked about how the team managed to stay focused amidst the allegations. “This helps them concentrate on the task at hand and also eliminates negative energy.”
Kakaivalu emphasized that this win is a stepping stone towards a larger goal. “We are aiming to put together an Under-18 side next year to compete for the silverware,” he stated.
Reflecting on their journey, the former Suva rugby winger noted the challenges faced, including their trip to Vanua Levu for the national qualifiers. They managed to secure a spot in the national quarterfinals after a thrilling 24-21 victory over Dreketi Central College, followed by wins against Ratu Kadavulevu School (11-5) and Ratu Navula College (13-10) in the semifinals.
“When we faced Ratu Kadavulevu School, I told the boys that the name of the school is just a name. Our boys fought with all their heart, and that determination was evident in our performance today,” he remarked.
