The Lami High School Under-19 rugby team remained unfazed by the criticisms and allegations directed at them during the Vodafone Deans Trophy finals. Head coach Beniamino Kakaivalu shared this insight after their narrow victory over Queen Victoria School, winning 20-19 at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
Kakaivalu explained that the players opted for a social media blackout to avoid distractions. “This helps them focus on the task at hand and also takes away the negative energy,” he said.
He also mentioned that this win marks the beginning of a larger vision for the team. “We are looking forward to fielding an Under-18 side next year to compete for the silverware,” he added.
Reflecting on their journey, Kakaivalu described the experience as challenging, especially their trip to Vanua Levu for the national qualifiers. They secured a place in the national quarterfinals by defeating Dreketi Central College 24-21, followed by an impressive upset against Ratu Kadavulevu School (11-5) and Ratu Navula College (13-10) in the semifinals.
“When we faced Ratu Kadavulevu School, I told the boys, it’s just the name of the school that is big. Our boys fought with all their heart and that was again evident today,” Kakaivalu remarked.
