The Lami High School Under-19 rugby team remained unfazed by the numerous criticisms and allegations they faced during the Vodafone Deans Trophy finals. This insight was shared with SUNsports on Saturday by head coach Beniamino Kakaivalu, following their narrow victory over Queen Victoria School with a score of 20-19 at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium.
Kakaivalu explained that the players decided to disconnect from social media, which he believes helped them to concentrate on their performance and avoid negative influences. He emphasized that the victory is just the beginning, as they are planning to assemble an Under-18 team next year to compete for additional trophies.
Reflecting on their journey, Kakaivalu noted the challenges they encountered, including traveling to Vanua Levu for national qualifiers. The team triumphed over Dreketi Central College with a score of 24-21 to advance to the national quarterfinals, where they surprised Ratu Kadavulevu School by winning 11-5, followed by a 13-10 victory against Ratu Navula College in the semifinals.
Kakaivalu motivated his players by downplaying the reputation of Ratu Kadavulevu School, asserting that the name alone should not intimidate them, and their determination was evident throughout the tournament.
