Lami High School Takes Sports Beyond the Field: A New Era in Education

LAMI High School participated with two teams in the Hibiscus Touch Rugby tournament that took place at Albert Park in Suva yesterday. This effort aligns with the school’s comprehensive educational philosophy, which views sports as an essential part of student development rather than merely an extracurricular activity.

Lami High School principal Naisa Cama emphasized the significance of sports by calling it a co-curricular activity and a potential career pathway. Following the accomplishments of their under-19 rugby team in Deans, the institution is expanding opportunities for students to excel in various sports.

Cama noted, “We are engaging our children in various sports, and upon receiving an invitation to this competition, we decided to include students interested in pursuing careers in this field.” He also mentioned plans for participation in cricket and rugby league during the off-season next term, ensuring that these activities complement their academic studies, with students attending holiday classes before their games.

The school is committed to achieving a 100 percent pass rate this year and is holding night classes to support this goal. “We believe in inclusive education, which means addressing each child’s individual needs,” Cama stated.

This initiative is important as it addresses the rising drug use among teenagers in Fiji, with the school aiming to keep students engaged and active. Cama expressed, “Given the social challenges we face, particularly the fight against drugs, we are providing students with alternative platforms to avoid negative influences.”

Through sports, students are encouraged to utilize their talents and build a meaningful career in athletics, transforming their downtime into productive pursuits. Looking ahead, the principal shared the school’s ambitions for 2025, which include establishing a girls’ rugby team for the Raluve competition and an under-18 Dean team, contingent on student enrollment numbers.
