The Lami High School Under-19 rugby team remained unfazed by criticisms and allegations during the Vodafone Deans Trophy finals. Head coach Beniamino Kakaivalu shared this insight with SUNsports after their narrow victory over Queen Victoria School, with a score of 20-19 at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
Kakaivalu noted that the players were on a social media blackout, which helped them concentrate on their game and minimize negativity. He expressed that this victory marks the beginning of a larger plan, as the team is aiming to field an Under-18 side next year to contend for further success.
Reflecting on their journey, Kakaivalu, a former winger for Suva, described the challenges they faced, including a trip to Vanua Levu for national qualifiers. The team secured their spot in the national quarterfinals after defeating Dreketi Central College 24-21, and they pulled off an upset against Ratu Kadavulevu School with an 11-5 win, followed by a close 13-10 victory over Ratu Navula College in the semifinals.
Kakaivalu emphasized the determination of his players, stating that the reputation of the schools they faced did not intimidate them, showcasing their passion and effort throughout the competition.
