The foreshore area of Lami Town is on track for significant enhancements, including the construction of the Tamavua-i-Wai and Tikaram Bridges. These developments are designed to improve access to Lami, facilitating smoother travel for residents and visitors alike.
As part of the upgrades, Tikaram Park will undergo expansion, which will accommodate a larger parking facility and a modern public transport hub. This hub has the potential to include water taxi services that would connect Lami to the capital city, Suva.
Azam Khan, the Acting Chief Executive of the Lami Town Council, discussed these initiatives during a meeting with the Standing Committee on Public Accounts. He emphasized that the new infrastructure aims to reduce traffic congestion and enhance travel options for residents, promoting safer and more convenient means of transport.
“The completion of the foreshore extension alongside the FRA’s bridge construction aims to expand Tikaram Park while providing adequate parking space. This initiative will allow motorists heading to Suva to park their vehicles and consider alternative public transport options, including water taxis,” Khan shared.
In addition to the bridges and transport hub, the foreshore is set to feature a farmers’ market, a small commercial center, and a dedicated area for public transport. Khan noted that a concept design for these improvements has already been developed and approved by the Council, with further discussions planned with the Fiji Roads Authority.
The upgrade efforts not only promise to enhance Lami’s accessibility but also aim to create a vibrant community space that fosters economic activity and improves the quality of life for residents. This initiative reflects a forward-thinking approach to urban development in the region.
