Ushant Lal from Tailevu Naitaisiri was named man of the match in their FMF Inter-District Championship premier division opener against Tavua, which took place yesterday. Lal netted the first goal in their 2-0 win over a depleted Tavua team, who finished with nine players.
The Vunimono High School student managed to outmaneuver Tavua’s goalkeeper Nalesoni Ravato during a one-on-one situation, putting his team ahead 1-0 at halftime. Lal expressed satisfaction with their performance, stating, “It was a great outing for the team; we played as brothers. Recording three points from the first game was good as it set the pace. We had to score goals, and Tavua was a good opponent.”
Tavua lost two players to red cards due to misconduct by goalkeeper Josaia Ratu and Ratu Nalewadonu in the first half. While Tavua attempted to regroup in the second half, they struggled to penetrate the sturdy Tailevu Naitaisiri defense. The score extended when France Catarogo added a second goal, defeating Ravato again with a powerful shot.
Tavua’s captain, Manasa Nawaikula, stated that the team is focused on recovering in their next game. He acknowledged the loss highlighted their weaknesses but remains hopeful as they prepare to face Savusavu on Thursday.
In another premier division match, Nasinu and Bua played to a 2-2 draw.
