Ushant Lal from Tailevu Naitaisiri was named the man of the match during the FMF Inter-District Championship premier division opener against Tavua, which took place yesterday.
Lal netted the first goal in the team’s 2-0 victory over Tavua, who played with nine men. The Vunimono High School student managed to score after a one-on-one situation with Tavua’s goalkeeper Nalesoni Ravato, giving Tailevu Naitaisiri a 1-0 lead at halftime.
“It was a great outing for the team; we played like brothers,” Lal expressed. “Securing three points from our first game was good as it set the momentum. We needed to find the back of the net, and Tavua proved to be good opponents.”
Tavua’s struggles escalated when they were reduced to nine players due to disciplinary issues involving goalkeeper Josaia Ratu and Ratu Nalewadonu in the first half. Although Tavua attempted to rally in the second half, they were unable to score against a strong opposing defense.
The lead expanded when France Catarogo scored the second goal, delivering a powerful shot that once again outmaneuvered Ravato.
Following the match, Tavua captain Manasa Nawaikula expressed hope for a rebound in the next match, acknowledging the loss highlighted their vulnerabilities. They remain optimistic as they prepare to face Savusavu on Thursday.
In another premier category match, Nasinu and Bua ended in a 2-all draw.
