Tui Nayau Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba has emphasized the need for greater inclusion of women and youth in the five-year development plan for Lakeba Nexus Holding Pte Ltd. His remarks came during an awareness meeting at the Kinoya Methodist Church hall in Nasinu, where he stressed that their active participation is vital for the sustainable development of the island.

During the meeting, Ratu Tevita also reflected on his recent installation as Turaga na Tui Nayau, Tui Lau, and Sau ni vanua o Lau in July 2025, marking a significant homecoming after completing the traditional vakasenuqanuqa ceremony. He unveiled a development plan that builds on previous frameworks and aligns with Lakeba’s Economic Strategic Plan through 2028.

He called for strong support and empowerment for committee representatives, especially those involved in small and medium enterprises and cooperatives. He underlined that structured business opportunities within the development plan would be essential for achieving these goals.

Aisake Taito, a committee representative, reinforced the importance of engaging youth, noting that meaningful involvement and economic opportunities are crucial to address social challenges faced by young people. By creating pathways for employment and training, Taito believes issues such as law-breaking and excessive alcohol consumption can be mitigated.

The meeting also outlined plans for the Lakeba Pine Project, deemed integral for the island’s forestry future. Ratu Tevita revealed a significant contract with Tropik Wood, which is expected to kickstart commercial forestry operations on Lakeba. The development plan includes a seven-month preparation period, with critical milestones such as the construction of a jetty at Wainiyabia and securing funding for necessary operations.

Company representative Aisake Taito emphasized that these steps are crucial for ensuring the project’s readiness for full implementation when operations begin. Furthermore, it’s confirmed that the first annual general meeting of Lakeba Nexus Holding Pte Ltd will take place in December 2027 at Tubou, Lakeba, where audited accounts will be presented.

The collaborative effort in planning marks a hopeful vision for Lakeba’s growth, ensuring that both women and youth play an essential role in shaping the community’s economic future.
