Clean-up efforts have begun in Lakeba, Lau, as local communities start to recover from the destruction caused by Tropical Cyclone Rae. Adi Sai Daumeke, a teacher at Ratu Finau Secondary School, reported that the cyclone’s strong winds have resulted in damage to the roofs of two teachers’ cottages and have also significantly impacted the island’s trees.

While residents are safe, they are facing challenges with water supply disruptions, which are hindering their recovery efforts. Daumeke explained, “Teachers are working on our school tank because there is no water at the moment. The electricity supply has already been restored.” As part of the recovery initiative, teachers have commenced clearing debris from the school premises.

Only one family has sought refuge at the evacuation center due to a leaking roof caused by the cyclone, which emphasizes the fact that the broader community remains largely safe. The joint efforts between authorities and residents become crucial as they collaborate to restore normalcy to the island.

Recent articles have underscored the significance of community solidarity during disaster recovery, illustrating similar proactive measures in various regions across Fiji, such as improved evacuation procedures and enhanced community readiness. The residents of Lakeba are exhibiting resilience through their collective actions and support systems, showcasing their ability to face challenges head-on.

As the recovery unfolds, this united spirit not only addresses immediate concerns but also lays the groundwork for future community strength. These collective efforts embody hope and illustrate how communities can unite to navigate through challenging times, ensuring safety and paving the way for recovery.
