Lakeba Island has taken significant steps towards sustainable development by formulating a comprehensive five-year strategic and business plan, according to committee member Aisake Taito. During an awareness meeting held at the Kinoya Methodist Church hall last Friday, Taito shared insights about the initiative, which aims to manage the island’s pine and other resources through a dedicated company.
This innovative model distinguishes the vanua, or traditional landholding group, from business operations, ensuring that transparency and accountability are at the forefront. Taito emphasized that the dividends produced from these ventures would directly benefit the community of Lakeba, while governance would remain independent and professionally managed.
The strategic plan is designed with a multi-faceted approach, concentrating on key areas such as faith, education, sustainable resource development, and the empowerment of women and youth. By focusing on these vital sectors, the initiative aims to uplift the villages on Lakeba and provide a secure future for upcoming generations. This proactive move not only demonstrates Lakeba’s commitment to responsible resource management but also highlights the importance of community involvement in achieving sustainable growth.
