Labasa’s Tourism Hindered by Waste Woes

Labasa’s potential as a tourism destination is hindered by inadequate waste disposal practices, according to Dr. Joeli Veitayaki, a strategic advisor for Blue Prosperity Fiji. He highlighted that significant amounts of waste, especially plastics, are not being managed effectively. “These plastics take years to decompose, leading to unattractive and unhygienic conditions that detract from Labasa’s appeal to tourists,” he remarked.

Speaking at a workshop organized by the Wildlife Conservation Society, Dr. Veitayaki pointed out that the unnecessary burning of forests and sugarcane fields exacerbates the situation. “This not only causes air pollution but also destroys natural habitats and diminishes the town’s scenic beauty. The frequent burning releases harmful emissions into the atmosphere,” he explained.

He emphasized the necessity for improved waste management systems and stricter land use regulations to tackle these issues effectively. “Only then can we address the problem,” he added.

In response, Samuela Ligairi, the special administrator of the Labasa Town Council, mentioned that new rubbish bins have been installed around the town to encourage proper waste disposal. Mr. Ligairi expressed hope that this initiative would help mitigate the improper disposal of waste.
