Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has urged the Government to uphold its commitments, particularly regarding infrastructure development in Labasa, which is vital for economic growth and investment. This plea comes in response to increasing dissatisfaction among commuters due to heavy traffic congestion and unmet promises concerning a new bypass in Labasa.
Mr. Seruiratu emphasized that effective infrastructure not only alleviates congestion but also fosters economic opportunity, insisting that the Government must deliver on its infrastructure promises. He stated, “Infrastructure development must involve co-ordination with the relevant ministries and cannot be pursued in isolation.” His remarks resonate with a broader concern over the governance surrounding Fiji’s road conditions.
The call to action was underscored by a previous commitment from Sugar Minister Charan Jeath Singh, who approved a $30 million bypass road designed to alleviate traffic along the tramline in Labasa Town. However, no progress has been made on this project, leading to frustration among locals relying on effective transport routes for their daily needs.
In the light of recent discussions, including those surrounding the necessity for better road conditions echoed by Seruiratu and other opposition members, the urgency for tangible improvements is particularly pressing. Past articles have highlighted similar frustrations expressed by public transport operators, indicating a consensus on the need for this bypass project to enhance transportation efficiency and support Labasa’s growth.
Engaging in constructive dialogue could pave the way for meaningful reforms in infrastructure, boosting public safety and ensuring that the needs of the citizens are prioritized. As stakeholders continue to voice their concerns and push for action, there remains hope for progress that could uplift Labasa’s infrastructure, benefiting both residents and the local economy significantly.
