Residents in Labasa are facing increased financial burdens for medical imaging, as the Health Ministry has ceased covering the costs of CT scans at Zen Medical Hospital, forcing individuals to pay upwards of $600. This decision stems from the ministry’s need to address an outstanding debt with the medical provider, according to Assistant Health Minister Penioni Ravunawa.

Previously, the ministry would fund scans on a case-by-case basis; however, Ravunawa emphasized that this arrangement had to pause temporarily as they work to clear their dues. The fate of the cost coverage remains unclear, pending further advice from the permanent secretary on whether or not the assistance will resume.

Mr. Ravunawa indicated that the situation is critical, particularly as Labasa plays a key role in medical referrals for the Northern Division. While a new CT scan machine has been installed at Labasa Hospital, it remains unusable due to power limitations. Plans are underway for a substantial electrical upgrade in collaboration with Energy Fiji Ltd and the Public Works Department to rectify these issues.

Moreover, delays with the CT scan installation have been attributed to previous administrative oversight in project planning. Ravunawa expressed that the government is prioritizing improvements at Labasa Hospital in hopes of enhancing medical services for the community.

In light of similar issues reported elsewhere, such as the malfunctioning X-ray machine at Savusavu sub-divisional hospital and concerns regarding other medical facilities, there is a pressing need for effective communication and timely actions from health authorities.

The combined efforts between the Ministry of Health and local stakeholders demonstrate a collective commitment toward boosting healthcare infrastructure. The forthcoming electrical upgrades at Labasa Hospital present an optimistic outlook for restoring essential medical services and addressing the healthcare challenges faced by local residents. This collaboration could ultimately lead to enhanced medical care accessibility for the community.
