Labasa’s Food Safety Crisis: Are Local Eateries at Risk?

Food safety concerns have escalated in Labasa, as several food establishments continue to struggle to meet health and safety standards, according to Divisional Health Inspector North Vakaruru Cavuilati. The inspector reported ongoing inspections by the Ministry have revealed numerous violations in hygiene and food handling practices, leading to temporary closures of certain restaurants and supermarkets.

Cavuilati noted that while most establishments have not faced permanent license revocation, many remain non-compliant with essential food safety requirements, prompting inspections that reveal critical areas needing improvement. He stated, “While the issues were not severe enough to warrant license revocation, we have temporarily closed some food establishments and given them time to address the identified defects. Upon re-inspection, most have shown significant improvement compared to the initial assessments.”

The rising number of complaints filed with the Consumer Council highlights the growing concerns over food safety, as locals are increasingly aware of hygiene practices in eateries. The Food and Beverage students at Naduna Campus emphasized the importance of adhering to food safety protocols across all food establishments, reflecting a commitment to fostering a culture of safety.

In light of World Food Safety Day, celebrated on June 7 annually, authorities are reminded of the critical need to prioritize food safety due to its significant implications for public health. Similarly, recent discussions among health authorities and the Consumer Council echoed the sentiment that raising awareness and compliance among food operators is essential to safeguard the wellbeing of consumers.
