A new gas crematorium in Labasa is on target for completion by late July, addressing a long-standing need for a decent farewell facility for residents. The government has dedicated approximately $250,000 to this project, highlighting its commitment to improving local infrastructure as part of ongoing development efforts in the northern part of Fiji.
For years, residents have had to cope without a suitable cremation facility, making this project critical for the community. Minister of Multi-ethnic Charan Jeath Singh emphasized that this will be the area’s first gas crematorium, located at the Tuatua Cemetery. He mentioned, “The government is investing over $250,000 to establish a new gas crematorium, which is expected to finish by July.”
Additionally, the government has arranged for a ‘Shradh Ghat’ space in Korovatu, Labasa. This area will serve as a designated site where families can dispose of the ashes or perform rituals for their deceased loved ones after funerals.
The development aligns with other initiatives aimed at enhancing local amenities, such as the plan to construct a Girmit Museum in Lautoka to honor the history of the Girmitiyas and preserve cultural heritage for future generations.
Efforts like these signal a positive step forward in improving community services and honoring traditions associated with loss and grief. By establishing this crematorium and expanding cultural sites, the government is demonstrating its dedication to meeting the needs of its citizens during difficult times while promoting historical awareness.
