Labasa’s Comeback Thrills Fans at IDC Opener!

Labasa overcame an early deficit to secure a 3-1 victory over Suva in a thrilling opening match of Group A at the 2024 FMF Inter District Championship (IDC) held at Churchill Park in Lautoka.

The match showcased strong performances from both sides, with early opportunities and impressive saves by goalkeepers Simione Tamanisau and Akuila Mateisuva. Suva struck first, with defender Joeli Ranitu scoring in the 41st minute off a header from a Joe Moses corner, catching Tamanisau and his defense off guard.

However, Labasa equalized just before halftime. A foul by Bruce Hughes on Lekima Gonerau in the penalty area led to a penalty, which Christopher Wasasala converted, sending both teams into the break with the score tied.

In the second half, veteran Taniela Waqa put Labasa ahead with a powerful shot in the 51st minute following a well-coordinated play in midfield. To respond, Suva Coach Babs Khan replaced players with Solomon Islanders Gagame Feni and Jaygrey Sipikana to strengthen their attack. Despite their efforts, Labasa sealed the game with a counterattack, culminating in a spectacular goal from Fordney Junior in the 87th minute.
