Labasa rallied from a goal down to secure a 3-1 victory over Suva in an exciting Group A match of the 2024 FMF Inter District Championship (IDC) at Churchill Park in Lautoka today.
The match showcased strong performances from both sides, with numerous opportunities and impressive saves from goalkeepers Simione Tamanisau and Akuila Mateisuva. Suva opened the scoring in the 41st minute when defender Joeli Ranitu headed in a corner from Joe Moses, catching Tamanisau and his defense off guard.
Just before halftime, Labasa equalized when Bruce Hughes fouled Lekima Gonerau in the penalty area. Christopher Wasasala converted the penalty, sending both teams into the break with the score tied.
The second half began with veteran Taniela Waqa putting Labasa ahead in the 51st minute after a well-coordinated buildup in midfield. In response, Suva Coach Babs Khan made strategic substitutions, bringing on Solomon Islanders Gagame Feni and Jaygrey Sipikana to strengthen their attack. However, Labasa remained resolute, and in the 87th minute, striker Fordney Junior capped off a counter-attack with a brilliant finish, sealing the win for his team.
