Labasa made a remarkable comeback to defeat Suva 3-1 in the opening match of Group A at the 2024 FMF Inter District Championship (IDC) held at Churchill Park in Lautoka today.
In a highly competitive match, both teams showcased their skills, with numerous near misses and impressive saves from goalkeepers Simione Tamanisau and Akuila Mateisuva. Suva struck first in the 41st minute when defender Joeli Ranitu scored with a header from a Joe Moses corner kick, leaving Labasa’s defense in disarray.
However, Labasa managed to equalize just before halftime. A foul by Bruce Hughes on Lekima Gonerau inside the box led to a penalty, which Christopher Wasasala converted, ensuring the teams went into the break with a 1-1 scoreline.
In the second half, Labasa took the lead with a powerful shot from veteran Taniela Waqa in the 51st minute following great teamwork in midfield. In an effort to turn the game around, Suva Coach Babs Khan introduced Solomon Islanders Gagame Feni and Jaygrey Sipikana to enhance their offense. Despite this, Labasa continued to push forward and sealed their victory in the 87th minute when forward Fordney Junior scored with an excellent finish during a counter-attack.
