Labasa’s Boxing Renaissance: A New Gym to Revitalize the Sport

Plans are underway to establish a boxing gym in Labasa, aimed at revitalizing both amateur and professional boxing in Vanua Levu. This information was shared by Samuela Ligairi, the special administrator of the Labasa Town Council (LTC), during an interview with SUNsports last Saturday.

Ligairi’s comments followed his attendance at the South Pacific Boxing Promotion event held at Subrail Park, marking the return of professional boxing to Labasa after a nine-year absence. He emphasized that the LTC intends to promote the sport through this new gym project.

The gym will be located near the botanical garden at Lions Park, with initial construction set to begin soon. This initiative is expected to receive support from the Ministry of Local Government, Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the Boxing Commission of Fiji. “We will have a boxing ring for training and it will be a fully equipped gym,” Ligairi stated.

Citing space limitations at the Nasekula Gym, Ligairi highlighted the necessity for a larger facility to accommodate a greater number of sports enthusiasts. The LTC has been in discussions with the Macuata Rugby Union (MRU) regarding the development of this expanded gym. The MRU played a crucial role in establishing the Nasekula gym, having provided equipment donated by Silktails Rugby League Club. Additionally, the LTC is reaching out to other Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) for support in this endeavor.

Ligairi also noted that the proposed gym would enhance the financial standing of the LTC and inspire individuals to engage in boxing, helping them to discover their potential. He mentioned that hosting significant sporting events, including the Digicel Fiji FACT football tournament, Fiji Secondary Schools rugby competition (Vodafone Deans Trophy), and boxing promotions, has revitalized the local community in Vanua Levu.

“This approach is holistic; it benefits not only the council but also the local economy, providing opportunities for hoteliers, taxi operators, market vendors, and restaurants to profit,” he added.
