The Labasa Youth Under-16 team is gearing up to defend their title in the Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) Digicel Fiji U16 Youth League Northern next year. With a strong foundation, the team is motivated by their recent successes, including the involvement of five of their players—Zaman Shah, Meli Goneva, Tukai Rovonukula, Avichal Lal, and Josaia Natubatilagi—who participated in the Fiji U16 trials. Notably, Rovonukula, Lal, and Natubatilagi earned places on the national team, which has successfully qualified for the upcoming FIFA World Cup U17.

The team’s recent thanksgiving event at Vunivau highlighted their accomplishments. Coach Shalendra Swami expressed gratitude to the 30 players who competed throughout the year. These young athletes came from various local schools, demonstrating the widespread support and talent in the region.

Over the season, the team played a total of ten games against other teams, including Nadogo, Savusavu, Seaqaqa, Bua, and Dreketi, achieving an impressive record of eight wins, one draw, and only one loss. They scored a remarkable 68 goals, showcasing their offensive strength. In recognition of his skills, Zaman Shah was nominated for the McDonald’s Elite Player of the Year award during the Fiji FA Awards Night 2024.

Coach Swami, who has been leading the team since 2020, aims to develop more talented players for national representation while focusing on winning the league next year. His commitment to the players is clear: creating a pathway for their growth and success in football.
