The Labasa Youth Under-16 team is focused on defending their title in the Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) Digicel Fiji U16 Youth League Northern next year. Recently, five members of the squad, including Zaman Shah, Meli Goneva, Tukai Rovonukula, Avichal Lal, and Josaia Natubatilagi, participated in the Fiji U16 trials. Notably, Rovonukula, Lal, and Natubatilagi earned selections to the national team.
Rovonukula, hailing from Tabia and a student at Labasa Sangam (SKM) College, led the team as captain. The national squad has recently secured a spot in the upcoming FIFA World Cup U17, marking a significant achievement for the players involved.
During a thanksgiving event held in Vunivau over the weekend, Labasa Youth U16 coach Shalendra Swami expressed gratitude towards the entire 30-member roster. The players represent a variety of schools, including Shri Guru Nanak Khalsa College, All Saints Secondary School, Labasa College, Labasa Sangam (SKM) College, Batinikama College, Labasa Muslim College, and Vunimoli Islamia College.
Coach Swami reported that the boys competed in ten matches throughout the year against teams from Nadogo, Savusavu, Seaqaqa, Bua, and Dreketi, achieving an impressive record with eight wins, one draw, and only one loss. The team set a remarkable milestone by scoring 68 goals this season. Additionally, Zaman Shah received a nomination for the McDonald’s Elite Player of the Year at the Fiji FA Awards Night 2024.
Having previously coached the Labasa Youth U16 squad in 2020 and 2021, Swami returned this year with a strong vision. He stated, “My aim is to win next year’s league and prepare more players to play for the national team.”
This determination from the Labasa Youth U16 not only highlights their commitment to excellence in football but also reflects the burgeoning talent in Fiji. With a solid foundation and supportive coaching, the team’s aspirations for the future inspire hope for continued success on both national and international stages.
