The Labasa Youth Under-16 team is determined to defend its title in the Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) Digicel Fiji U16 Youth League Northern next year. Their aspiration follows a successful season where key players showcased their talent at the Fiji U16 trials. Notably, Tukai Rovonukula, Avichal Lal, and Josaia Natubatilagi earned selections, with Rovonukula, a Tabia native and Labasa Sangam (SKM) College student, serving as team captain.
The team’s successful run has also given rise to broader achievements, as the national team they contribute to has qualified for the next FIFA U17 World Cup. During a recent thanksgiving event held in Vunivau, Labasa Youth U16 coach Shalendra Swami expressed his gratitude towards the 30-player squad. The diverse team members hail from various educational institutions including Shri Guru Nanak Khalsa College, All Saints Secondary School, and Labasa College, among others.
Coach Swami highlighted the team’s impressive performance, noting they played 10 matches throughout the year, with a record of eight wins, one draw against Seaqaqa, and only one loss to Dreketi. Remarkably, the team scored a total of 68 goals, establishing a new benchmark. Additionally, Zaman Shah was nominated for the McDonald’s Elite Player of the Year award during the Fiji FA Awards Night 2024.
Returning to lead the squad after coaching in 2020 and 2021, Swami is focused on not only capturing next year’s league title but also developing more players for future opportunities at the national level.
In summary, the Labasa Youth U16 team is on a promising path, celebrating past victories while gearing up for future challenges. Their commitment to excellence exemplifies the potential of youth sports in Fiji. With a strong leadership and dedicated players, the team can look forward to a bright future in football.
