The Labasa Youth Under-16 team is determined to defend their title in the Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) Digicel Fiji U16 Youth League Northern next season. The team recently showcased their talent at the Fiji U16 trials, where five players participated: Zaman Shah, Meli Goneva, Tukai Rovonukula, Avichal Lal, and Josaia Natubatilagi. Notably, Rovonukula, Lal, and Natubatilagi were selected for the national squad.
Tukai Rovonukula, from Tabia and a student at Labasa Sangam (SKM) College, has taken on the role of team captain. The national team achieved success by qualifying for the upcoming FIFA U17 World Cup.
During a recent thanksgiving event held in Vunivau, the Labasa Youth U16 coach, Shalendra Swami, expressed gratitude to the 30-member squad. The players originated from various schools, including Shri Guru Nanak Khalsa College, All Saints Secondary School, Labasa College, Labasa Sangam College, Batinikama College, Labasa Muslim College, and Vunimoli Islamia College.
Coach Swami shared that the team played 10 matches throughout the year against opponents such as Nadogo, Savusavu, Seaqaqa, Bua, and Dreketi, finishing with eight victories, one draw against Seaqaqa, and one loss to Dreketi. Remarkably, the team set a record by scoring 68 goals over the season.
Zaman Shah was nominated for the McDonald’s Elite Player of the Year during the Fiji FA Awards Night scheduled for 2024. Coach Swami, who also teaches at All Saints Secondary School and has previously coached the team in 2020 and 2021, is back this year with hopes of winning next year’s league while preparing more players for national representation.
This demonstrates the team’s commitment and the potential of young athletes in Fiji, hinting at a promising future for local football talent. With ongoing dedication and effort, Labasa’s youth players are not only honing their skills but also paving the way for future successes on international stages.
