The Labasa Youth Under-16 team is determined to defend its title in the Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) Digicel Fiji U16 Youth League next year. Recently, five players from the team, including Zaman Shah, Meli Goneva, Tukai Rovonukula, Avichal Lal, and Josaia Natubatilagi, participated in Fiji U16 trials, with Rovonukula, Lal, and Natubatilagi securing spots on the national team.

Captaining the team is Tukai Rovonukula, a Tabia native and student at Labasa Sangam (SKM) College. This year, the national U16 team achieved significant success by qualifying for the FIFA World Cup U17, showcasing the promising talent in Labasa.

During a recent thanksgiving event held in Vunivau, Labasa Youth U16 coach Shalendra Swami expressed his gratitude to the entire 30-member squad. The players hail from various schools, including Shri Guru Nanak Khalsa College, All Saints Secondary School, Labasa College, and others.

Swami highlighted the team’s impressive performance, stating that they played ten matches against teams from Nadogo, Savusavu, Seaqaqa, Bua, and Dreketi, achieving eight wins, one draw, and one loss. They also set a record by scoring an impressive 68 goals throughout the season. Zaman Shah’s talent was recognized when he was nominated for the McDonald’s Elite Player of the Year during the Fiji FA Awards Night 2024.

Having previously coached the Labasa Youth U16 squad in 2020 and 2021, Swami has returned this year with the goal to win the league and continue developing players for the national team.

This story reflects the hard work and determination of young athletes in Labasa, and with dedicated coaching and continued support, these players hold great potential for future success on both local and international stages. Their achievements not only bring pride to their community but also inspire future generations of footballers.
