The Labasa Youth Under-16 team is determined to defend their title in the Fiji Football Association’s Digicel Fiji U16 Youth League Northern next year. This ambition follows a successful season where the team not only triumphed in their league but also contributed several players to the national trials. Five members of the squad—including Zaman Shah, Meli Goneva, Tukai Rovonukula, Avichal Lal, and Josaia Natubatilagi—attended the Fiji U16 trials, with Rovonukula, Lal, and Natubatilagi securing selections for the national team.
Tukai Rovonukula, who is also a student at Labasa Sangam (SKM) College and hails from Tabia, led the team as captain. The national squad has further distinguished itself by qualifying for the upcoming FIFA U17 World Cup.
During a thanksgiving event held at Vunivau last weekend, Labasa Youth U16 coach Shalendra Swami expressed his gratitude to the entire 30-member squad, noting their robust performance throughout the season. The team competed in ten matches against local rivals including Nadogo, Savusavu, Seaqaqa, Bua, and Dreketi, achieving an impressive record of eight wins, one draw, and just one loss. Notably, they scored a remarkable total of 68 goals over the season.
Zaman Shah’s talent was recognized when he was nominated for the McDonald’s Elite Player of the Year during the Fiji FA Awards Night for 2024. Swami, who has been coaching the Labasa Youth U16 team since 2020, mentioned his goal for next season is not only to secure another league victory but also to prepare more players for the national team.
This news highlights the promising future of football in Labasa, showcasing young talent and a strong competitive spirit. The dedication of both the players and the coaching staff sets a positive tone for the continued development of the sport in the region.
In summary, the Labasa Youth Under-16 team is poised for another strong season, with aspirations of retaining their league title as they also contribute to national representation in future international competitions.
