The Labasa Youth Under-16 team is focused on defending their title in the Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) Digicel Fiji U16 Youth League Northern next season. This determination follows a successful year, highlighted by several players attending the Fiji U16 trials. From this group, Tukai Rovonukula, Avichal Lal, and Josaia Natubatilagi were ultimately selected for the team.
Rovonukula, who is a standout player from Tabia and a student at Labasa Sangam College, captained the team. His leadership was pivotal as the national team achieved its objective of qualifying for the upcoming FIFA U17 World Cup.
In a recent thanksgiving event held in Vunivau, Labasa Youth U16 coach Shalendra Swami expressed his appreciation for the squad, which comprised 30 players from various schools including Shri Guru Nanak Khalsa College, All Saints Secondary School, Labasa College, and Labasa Muslim College.
Throughout the season, the team competed in 10 matches against local rivals such as Nadogo, Savusavu, Seaqaqa, Bua, and Dreketi. Their performance included eight victories, one draw against Seaqaqa, and a single defeat to Dreketi, culminating in an impressive tally of 68 goals this year alone.
Zaman Shah, a key player from the squad, has also been nominated for the McDonald’s Elite Player of the Year at the upcoming Fiji FA Awards Night 2024, showcasing the individual talent within the team.
Coach Swami, who previously led the team in 2020 and 2021, has returned with the goal of winning the league next year and nurturing more players for the national team. His commitment to developing young talent is commendable and reflects a promising future for Labasa youth football.
