A weekend fishing excursion turned tragic when a 19-year-old’s body was recovered from the Wailevu River in Labasa, marking a heartbreaking incident that authorities consider a recent drowning. The victim, identified as Avick Avinesh Chand, was discovered around 2:30 PM on the riverbank.

Reports indicate that Chand was fishing with his father when he unexpectedly slipped into the water and vanished. Upon learning of the incident, the Labasa Police Station was notified, prompting a search operation over the weekend.

Initial search efforts were hampered by strong currents and murky water conditions, leading to a temporary halt. However, as conditions improved, search operations resumed, culminating in the tragic discovery of Chand’s body. The authorities are currently investigating the case further, treating it as a drowning incident.

While this event has cast a shadow over the community, it serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers associated with water activities. Families are encouraged to remain vigilant and exercise caution near rivers and bodies of water to prevent such tragedies in the future.
