The Labasa Youth Under-16 team is focused on defending its title in the Digicel Fiji U16 Youth League Northern next year. Recently, five members of the squad—Zaman Shah, Meli Goneva, Tukai Rovonukula, Avichal Lal, and Josaia Natubatilagi—participated in the Fiji U16 trials, with Rovonukula, Lal, and Natubatilagi successfully earning spots on the national team.

Tukai Rovonukula, who is also the captain of the Labasa team and a student at Labasa Sangam (SKM) College, leads his teammates as they prepare for next year’s competition. The national team’s success in qualifying for the FIFA World Cup U17 has sparked excitement and motivation within the youth ranks.

During a recent thanksgiving event held in Vunivau, Labasa Youth U16 coach Shalendra Swami expressed his gratitude to the 30-member squad who contributed throughout the season. The players come from various local schools, showcasing the community’s commitment to football development. Over the year, the team played 10 matches against competitors such as Nadogo, Savusavu, Seaqaqa, Bua, and Dreketi, recording eight wins, one draw, and one loss, while achieving an impressive tally of 68 goals.

Zaman Shah’s nomination for the McDonald’s Elite Player of the Year at the Fiji FA Awards Night 2024 highlights the individual talent present in the squad. Coach Swami, who resumed his role after previously coaching the team in 2020 and 2021, remains dedicated to grooming future players for national representation. His optimism for winning the league next year and developing more athletes for the national team reflects a hopeful outlook for Labasa football.

In summary, the Labasa Youth U16 team is well-prepared for the upcoming challenge and is inspired by their recent accomplishments, showcasing the vibrant potential of youth football in Fiji. With strong leadership and community support, the prospects for the team and its players look brighter than ever.
