Extra Supermarket Labasa emerged victorious in the BiC Fiji FACT tournament, claiming a $17,000 prize after defeating Ajay Trading Rewa 4-2 in a penalty shootout at HFC Bank Stadium, Suva. The thrilling final concluded in a 1-1 draw after regulation time, setting the stage for the tense penalty shootout.

This triumph marked Labasa’s first Fiji FACT title since 2015 and highlighted the team’s growth and resilience. Coach Alvin Chand, who celebrated his first tournament as head coach, credited the victory to the team’s dedication and the passionate support from families who traveled from Labasa. “There were many reasons for us to win this tournament; it was not only a farewell for our outgoing president Rayaz Khan but also a gift for our new president, Shaheen Hussain,” he remarked.

Labasa captain and goalkeeper Simione Tamanisau not only led his team on the pitch but also clinched the prestigious Golden Gloves award. His dedication to the sport shone through as he dedicated the win to police officers in the North, recognizing their commitment to the community. Notably, Rusiate Doidoi was awarded the Golden Ball for being named player of the final, while Suva’s Joe Moses secured the Golden Boot with a total of four goals during the tournament.

The match was filled with excitement as veteran players showcased their skills under pressure. The journey to victory was fueled by the team’s collective effort and determination to overcome past challenges, such as a disappointing group stage defeat earlier in the tournament.

Labasa’s triumph is more than just a win; it represents a revitalization of Fijian football and a deep connection within the community, which continues to support and rally behind their teams. The victory paints a hopeful picture for Labasa as they look forward to future challenges and opportunities in Fijian football, all while celebrating the spirit of resilience and togetherness.
