The Washington Tin Band brought a surge of energy to Labasa Town yesterday with an engaging performance that marked a joyful return to festivities following the cancellation of the New Year street party in the Northern Division. This 13-member ensemble, hailing from Lami Village in Suva, entertained crowds outside Dutt’s Shoe World and Chinatown Shops using a collection of instruments crafted from empty drums, tins, sticks, and containers.

Band leader Mosese Ravadra explained that their musical tour, which began earlier in Bua, is dedicated to spreading New Year wishes through their vibrant performances. “We’re spending a few days in Labasa visiting villages before heading to Savusavu and Taveuni by the end of the week,” he noted. This initiative marks the band’s second consecutive year traveling from Viti Levu to Vanua Levu to share the joy of the New Year.

During their performances, a tin is placed among the musicians to encourage contributions from the audience. These donations primarily support the band members, especially students, with their back-to-school expenses. “There’s no fixed amount; whatever the generous people of the friendly North bless us with will be used for our children, who have dedicated their time to perform during this tour,” Mr. Ravadra stated.

Additionally, Ravadra highlighted that another group of younger musicians is performing on the streets of Suva, ensuring that the spirit of the New Year reaches a wider audience. “Our goal is to include everyone in this celebration and bring joy wherever we go,” he mentioned.

The Washington Tin Band’s efforts beautifully merge entertainment with community support, providing a heartwarming start to the year for families across the North and beyond. Their initiative exemplifies how music can foster unity, enhance community bonds, and offer hope and joy, especially in times of need.

In summary, the Washington Tin Band’s performances not only enrich the cultural landscape but also build strong communal ties, illustrating the dual role of music in uplifting spirits while promoting educational support for local families. Their commitment to blending festive enjoyment with social responsibility sends a positive message of hope for the year ahead.
