The vibrant streets of Labasa Town were filled with excitement yesterday as the Washington Tin Band showcased their energetic performance, marking a significant festive highlight following the cancellation of the New Year’s street party in the Northern Division. Originating from Lami Village in Suva, this 13-member band captivated onlookers with their lively music created from empty drums, tins, sticks, and containers, drawing crowds outside Dutt’s Shoe World and Chinatown Shops.

Band leader Mosese Ravadra shared that their entertainment tour commenced earlier this week in Bua, intending to spread New Year cheer throughout Labasa before continuing to Savusavu and Taveuni by the week’s end. “We’re spending a few days in Labasa visiting villages to wish everyone a happy New Year through our music,” he emphasized. This marks the second consecutive year the Washington Tin Band has journeyed from Viti Levu to Vanua Levu to spread joy during the festive season.

During their performances, the band invites spectators to contribute by placing a tin among the musicians. The funds collected will go towards supporting the band members, particularly students, with their back-to-school expenses. “There’s no fixed amount; whatever the generous people of the friendly North bless us with will be used for our children, who have sacrificed their time to perform during this tour,” Mr. Ravadra explained.

Additionally, a younger group of band members is performing on the streets of Suva, ensuring that no one misses out on the New Year’s spirit. “Our goal is to include everyone in this celebration and bring joy wherever we go,” he stated.
